I started building furniture at 17, when my grandma Jeannette asked me to build her a nightstand from heritage white oak and walnut from the family land. That simple piece was all it took for me to know that woodworking would be my life's passion.
After a few stops & starts over the years, relocating a few times and having to replace/rebuild each time, I started to think about how I could shift to a more sustainable & adaptable practice- so began my latest journey into custom "functional art" furniture design and small production art pieces using recycled & repurposed materials.
Starting with recycled wood art in 2017, I came to use primarily what I call the act of 'capture' - preserving and highlighting the surface presentation, color, texture and shape of reclaimed wood pieces. While choice, placement, and processing play vital roles in orientation of pieces, proportion is the constant focal point. This, combined with subtle allusions to 3-dimensional space within the design, forms the style that I stand behind.
Imperfections and mistakes are the most beautiful part of life. They build a wall of challenge, over which we clamber and find new perspective. Overcoming our tendency towards perfection in pursuit of a goal yields twists and turns along the way; mistakes of the journey eventually welcomed like old friends. Goals shift, paths realign, and an accepting of the inevitable in stride provides the foundation of beauty. At least that's my take on it.
